Academy Distance Learning Plan

graduation cap IMPORTANT GRADUATION INFORMATION graduation cap

The MA Class of 2020 will be graduating at the Sandwich Fairgrounds on Saturday June 13, at 4:00 pm.  We have planned this important event in accordance with the Dept. of Education’s End of Year Event Guidelines and Governor Sununu’s Emergency Orders.

Attendance will be limited to graduates and invited guests. W
e wish we could allow more members of the public to attend in person, circumstances and space simply won’t allow it this year.  We are excited, though, that we’ve contracted to have this year’s graduation ceremony both livestreamed on the internet and broadcast live on the radio.  These formats will allow everyone interested, no matter how distant geographically, to celebrate with the graduates.

More details can be found here.

Distance Learning Update April 3: Freeform Fridays

April 3, 2020
First of all, thank you for your support and cooperation as we walk together on this Distance Learning road.  It’s not been without frost heaves but it seems to be proceeding fairly well given the circumstances.  We are learning as we go and trying to be responsive to the needs and concerns of students and families as well as staff.  We have sent out surveys to both students and parents to receive feedback and I’d like to encourage you to fill those out if you haven’t already.

Beginning Friday April 10th there will be a significant adjustment to our Distance Learning Program.  Based on feedback from the first two weeks, as well as the recommendation of all the major educational associations in the state of New Hampshire, we will structure Fridays differently than the rest of the week.  Teachers will continue to provide continuous learning opportunities Monday through Thursday as we have been doing since March 23.  Fridays will be set aside as a day for students and teachers to catch up or to engage in some self-directed enrichment opportunities.  We are finding that some students need more time and more support in this new on-line environment and we want to be able to provide that.  We are also finding that teachers need more time to plan for the coming days.  What was originally scheduled to be a three-week closure has now been extended for at least an additional three weeks (until May 4th) and teachers need time to adjust.  With this in mind, this is what to expect on Fridays beginning April 10th:
Students are encouraged to disconnect from their electronic devices to the degree practicable.

A weekly chart of engaging enrichment opportunities will be posted every week on Schoology and in the Daily Announcements (accessible through the MA Home Page).  The chart will provide suggestions for students who would like to engage in self-directed learning and will be divided into categories such as Nature, Culture, History, Creativity, Wellness, etc.  We want to support and encourage all of our students to be well balanced and to take care of their multi-dimensional selves in this time of physical distancing.

Students who choose to engage in some of the posted Enrichment activities are encouraged to send a picture to spirit@sau45.org.  We will compile the pictures each week and display them as a means of staying connected, sharing experiences, and encouraging students to extend their learning.

Teachers will not be available to students on Fridays except by pre-arrangement.  These arrangements will be scheduled by teachers no later than Thursday’s class time. Students are encouraged to use their PAWS time Monday through Thursday to access their teachers for assistance so that teachers can use Fridays to focus on planning and preparing for the upcoming week.  It is very important to respect this expectation as the longer the school closure order extends the more challenging it will be on our talented teaching and support staff.
As always, call or email if you have questions or concerns.  We are doing our best to listen and be responsive to the challenges you face at home.  We ask for your patience in the coming days as we continue to provide your children with the best high school education we can.

Be well!

Andrew J. Coppinger,

MA High School Principal
